It’s about long distance relationships, which is particularly pertinent to my current relationship. It’s a funny film, though sometimes I thought it was a little too sappy. But the funny parts? Man, they’re hilarious. Watch out for Jim Gaffigan’s first appearance eating a sandwich and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Another reason I wanted to see the film is because it features a band I’m pretty interested in right now: The Boxer Rebellion. I went to see them play an event at Bryant Park a few weeks ago, and I must say, they’re pretty great live. They’re British, though lead singer Nathan Nicholson is from Tennessee, and guitarist Todd Howe is Australian, and they’ve made their way up the charts with several hard hitting pop-rock tunes. I think this film could really push them over the top in the US, but I guess we’ll see in time. If nothing else, it will get them some much deserved attention.

I hadn’t heard much about them for the past decade, though, so I was a bit caught off guard when the label hired me to shoot some press photos for the (now) trio back in May. Regardless – and despite some hiccups with securing the right to shoot on location – we came out with some cool shots. Check out my favorites, and check out the band: their newest record, On the Ones and Threes, comes out tomorrow (order it here), and the band is playing a headlining show at The Rock Shop in Brooklyn on the 12th.

The shot ended up creating a bit of a feud between myself and the site Hipster Runoff. No link to his site, because there’s nothing there that you’ll need to read. Ever. Anyway, when I did the shot, I also took some individual shots that I meant to piece together, but I was happy enough with the group shot that I never got around to the composite. Well, today I decided to take that up and put together the shot, so after an afternoon of work this is my final product.

Let me assure you, it’s not due to a lack of photography from my end – May has been a busy, busy, busy month. More event-type things than music, but I’m getting the bills paid. Anyway, I’ll be sharing some of what I’ve shot over the past few weeks in my upcoming posts.

First off are some shots from two weeks ago – I got to see Free Energy play a Ray Ban event when they opened for Iggy Pop at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Unfortunately, they had a very short set and I was only able to be there for a few songs. Iggy played for a good hour, but I was more interested in enjoying his performance than taking photos, so I’m only sharing my favorite shot of him. It was a lot of fun, despite the awful crowd of socialites that were “important” enough to get invited. If you don’t know Free Energy, keep your eyes peeled – they’replaying about 40 million shows this summer.

While I’d heard their record (and loved it), they kept slipping by every time they came into town. Well, not this time. I took the opportunity to see the band play a sold-out show at The Bell House and I’m so glad I did. They blew me away, quite honestly.

Before the show I got to hang around with the guys (and girl) a bit and take a few candids. They were super sweet about it and I hope they like the shots I got. Most of the live shots were taken during the soundcheck, but some come from the show as well. And if you don’t know this band, go at it. Please.

It was a treat to see such a great band play such a tiny venue – their most recent show in New York had been at BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House, which holds about 2100 people. Union Hall, on the other hand, fits about 100, so you knew it was going to be a special show.

I was excited to hear some of the band’s new material, and it sounded beautiful. I’m looking forward to hearing the entire disc, which should be out this fall, I believe. While I loved the new stuff, I was so happy that they didn’t leave out their older gems – there were a few songs off of The Rhumb Line that would have been a disappointment to not hear.

Anyway, as always it was dark and as saturated as possible in there, so I’m not exactly thrilled with my array of photos, but you can check out the full photo set over at Brooklyn Vegan.

It was stunning, to say the least. If you’re not familiar with the band, do yourself a favor and check out their music – their record, Unicorn, has been on repeat in my apartment for some time now. Though they played a few shows down at SXSW, I wasn’t able to make it out to any of them, and until yesterday I completely forgot they were set to play one of my favorite venues, Littlefield, last night. Thankfully, I was able to make it work, and the band was gracious enough to grant me a portrait after their soundcheck. My favorite snaps from that session below, and keep your eyes open for my live shots from the night which should be going up on Brooklyn Vegan soon. Despite not having her full band, her songwriting prowess is undeniable. The songs didn’t sound like they do on the album, but I had no objections to that – the stripped down versions just accentuated how beautiful her voice is and how finely crafted her songs are. I’m excited for everyone to hear Cate’s music - Me Oh My is out May 4 on The Control Group – and be sure to keep your ears out for her come September when she does her first full band dates in New York.

After the show (live shots will be up later on Brooklyn Vegan) I got the chance to do a quick photo shoot with Cate. Here are my favorite 3 shots from that session.

Though I probably won’t do a huge gallery of shots from the trip on here, I do want to share some of my favorites. This first one comes from Lagos, on the southern coast of Portugal in The Algarve. It is the historical downtown section of the city as taken from a hill. That’s the old city wall that surrounds it at the bottom of the frame. More photos will be coming shortly!
