Freelance Whales Played The Bedford Avenue Subway Station

Last night around rush hour Freelance Whales played a somewhat secret/surprise set on the Bedford Avenue subway station platform. It’s the same platform that the quintet got their start on, so it was a homecoming of sorts for them, I guess. They’re now used to playing larger venues – they’re on tour with Shout Out Louds right now and toured with Fanfarlo last December – but to see an intimate acoustic set like this really brings out the beauty in the bands harmonies and instrumentations. The gig was almost cut short by cops who said we were blocking the station and making things dangerous, but they let us move down to the end of the platform where there was no traffic to finish the set. Glad I made it out – this is one of my favorite new bands and their record, Weathervanes, is out on Frenchkiss/Mom+Pop Records on April 13. It’s a beautiful record and you should definitely pick it up when you get the chance!
