On Thursday night I took a last second job shooting for Hype Machine. You’re probably well aware of the website (I shot for them once before) – they aggregate mp3s from various blogs and list them all in one place. It’s pretty genius, if you think about it. This event was also pretty smart – host a used CD swap in conjunction with Housing Works and charge a few bucks for a few good bands. It worked perfectly (despite the weather) and they made me a fan of a couple new bands.
Starting out the night was Cuddle Magic, a somewhat cutesy/quirky 8 piece group with interesting instrumentation. Reminded me of Freelance Whales, actually. Next up was Shark?. They held their own quite well and I’m really looking forward to listening to their record. They brought good energy to that stage. Finally The Morning Benders came on and played an acoustic set that was just stunning. The band’s new record, Big Echo, is easily one of my favorite records of 2010. Grab it when it comes out in a few weeks.
