Wavves Played Brooklyn Bowl

Last Tuesday night, before heading to see The Soundtrack of Our Lives do an acoustic set, I made my way to Brooklyn Bowl to see noise pop band Wavves. It was The L Magazine‘s Mardi Gras party and was free to all. Due to the weather the pre-show parade didn’t so much happen, but I would have missed it with the way things timed out anyway.

As for the show, Total Slacker started out. Though they seemed to fit the profile of bands I wouldn’t like, they kept me with them for the first while and it wasn’t until their 20 minute closing jam that I really started to dislike them. It was just too much. Too self-indulgent for my tastes. The big highlight was the T Rex vs. Gorilla wresting match that happened around the same time.

Then came MNDR, aka Amanda Warner. I had high hopes for the Brooklyn-based electro up-and-comer, but was left slightly disappointed. I should say it this way: I liked her music when I could get past her obnoxious stage persona.

Wavves closed out the night and were about what I expected. They didn’t blow me away, but they made me a bit more of a fan than I was before the show. I didn’t realize they now have the drummer and bassist from Jay Reatard’s band. Their stage interaction was pretty funny, but you could tell the band hadn’t rehearsed much. Heck, they even admitted to not having rehearsed since December. I could have handled a much tighter set from them.

Overall not the best line-up I’ve seen, but it was still a fun night.
