Another of my highlights from CMJ was being hired to shoot the Hype Machine/Babelgum showcase at Santos Party House on Wednesday afternoon. Just four acts, but four acts that I was decently excited about. I’d heard the name Sleigh Bells around the blogosphere so was happy to see them, Vega I had just seen about two months ago opening for Beach House and Grizzly Bear at The Pool Parties, I’d seen Theophilus do a short set at the Diesel Party at the end of July and Midnight Juggernauts were new-ish to me. All four acts performed above my expectations, particularly Sleigh Bells.
In terms of photography, I was excited to see the lighting in the basement wasn’t terrible. I think I had just assumed it would be. It still wasn’t bright, but at least it was interesting and gave opportunities to have something more than just red light. It was also great to get the chance to do some quick band portraits outside the venue. That’s something I’m trying to find a way to get better at – up to this point I’ve not done much in terms of promo shots, but I’m always looking for more opportunities to improve.
Also wanted to thank Abbey Braden for hooking me up with this gig – she’s the best. If you haven’t seen her work, check out her website and my post about her photo exhibition last month.
