Tuesday night I was able to catch a few of my favorite upcoming Brit acts at Mercury Lounge. Jack Peñate and Miike Snow co-headlined the bill for a two night sold-out stand. While both had the potential of being very good to photograph, I didn’t feel like either ultimately lent themselves to being photographed.
Miike Snow came out with masks in nearly pitch black. I found it nearly impossible to get a good frontal shot of them, and with 6 or 7 people on stage it was too dark to get a good wide shot without flash. I was saved by the backlighting and a few stoic moments, however, as that allowed me to play with longer shutters in conjunction with my on-camera flash (left the 430ex at home).
For Jack it was more of a struggle. Mr. Peñate likes to jump around. He’s a frontman that a photographer could really love… if he weren’t in the pitch-black pit that is Mercury Lounge. Instead I got lots of blurry shots and had to resort to long-exposures with my on-camera flash. Not particularly thrilled with the set of photos, but the show itself was one of the most fun sets I can remember. Also their music is killer.
